This carving of a ram is very appropriate.
This was a huge sheep farming area in medieval times and much of the Churchs donations would have come from the local landowners. Wool was a very valuable commodity at that time.

This is thought to be the base of the old market cross which was found at the crossroads of West End Lane, Lowgate and Church Lane.
